My wife is a big fan of “The Biggest Loser,” a reality show that features morbidly obese contestants who live on a ranch for months and compete to see who can lose the most weight. I’m a big fan of country music. Now those two worlds have merged. Recent contestant Dan Evans stretched his 15 minutes of fame from “The Biggest Loser” into a budding musical career. I never like Dan as a contestant, but his music doesn’t sound half bad. Incidentally, I’m only moderately interested in “The Biggest Loser.” I typically get a lot of blogging done from my recliner while it’s on the television. I do enjoy seeing the contestants’ amazing transformations from start to finish of the show, and I love watching trainer Jillian Michaels browbeat the players on her infamous black team. But sadly, I can’t say the show has been all that inspiring to me. More often than not, I can’t resist the urge to snack while watching the contestants shed their pounds and develop will power. Ironically, “The Biggest Loser” has been one of the biggest explanations of my recent weight gain. Filed under: Food and People and Redneck Music and Sports and Video Comments: None |

I loved Sheila E.’s song “The Glamorous Life” and, like many other high school boys, had a huge, hormone-inspired crush on her. Now comes word that she is a fan of country music and has a role in the latest installment of the Country Music Television series “Gone Country.” I’m in love all over again. I could listen to this song over and over again even after hearing it repeatedly when it was popular last year. It reminds me of my home and the way I was raised (minus the hypocrisy of playing five-card poker on Saturday night before I went to church on Sunday morning). Days after his heart surgery, Grandpa asked a nurse, “Will I be able to play the banjo?” She assured him he would. “That’s wonderful,” Grandpa Tumblebug answered. “I’ve always wanted to play the banjo.” He was such a fun-loving man. I miss him. Filed under: Family and Redneck Music Comments: 2 Comments |

Listen to country music and you’ll get some great ideas for New Year’s resolutions — something better than the old standby “lose weight.” Here are some examples from song titles:

This redneck isn’t yet so enlightened that he appreciate operas. I did once let my Louisiana-bred wife drag me to a performance of “Les Miserables” at National Theater in Washington, D.C., but I certainly wasn’t “less miserable” while watching the show than I was before it began. That said, I suspect I’d rather enjoy a show created by a Julliard-trained singer whose colleagues once called him “Opera Redneck.” Like any good enlightened redneck, he took the insult and used it as the inspiration for a unique approach to opera: the 3 Redneck Tenors.
They’ll be performing with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra on New Year’s Eve. Check the schedule if you want to see the show. I hope they add a stop in the D.C. area. For now, I’ll have to settle for this sample I found on YouTube: Filed under: Culture and Redneck Humor and Redneck Music and Video Comments: None |

With one huge exception, I love being home for the holidays. This singing reindeer is the exception: My children and young nephews and nieces get their kicks by chasing me around the house and playing this rendition of “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” over and over and over again. A couple of years ago, the torture got so bad that I hid the reindeer from everyone, including my parents. No one found it until well after the New Year. But that only encouraged the kids to make an even bigger game of annoying me with the song. I figured I’d do my part to get under the skin of everyone on the World Wide Web by posting a video of the redneck reindeer this year. Merry Christmas! Three straight posts about deer — I guess I’ve established a theme for the weekend, but it’s an appropriate one for the season, don’t ya think? Filed under: Culture and Holidays and Redneck Humor and Redneck Music Comments: None |

This video was filmed In Glen Dale, W.Va., about a half-hour from my hometown of Paden City. Paisley is a native of Glen Dale, and I used to go to his high school (John Marshall) every winter to watch our band perform in an annual stage band competition.
