Diary Of A D.C. Commuter
Posted on 06.26.10 by K. Daniel Glover @ 8:40 pm

Speaking of the D.C. Metro system, I had a lousy week on the commuting front. Most of the problems were on the Virginia Railway Express, but the Metro system is typically the bigger headache.

My travails were so trying this week that I wrote about them regularly in various social media outlets. I’ve decided to compile my highs (not many) and lows here as my first entry of a new feature, “Diary Of A D.C. Commuter.” Here’s a recap from this week’s posts on Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare:

  • Monday: “Another #Metro car sauna. This really is getting ridiculous, @wmata. Trains shouldn’t be hotter than steamy stations. #metrofail”
  • Tuesday: “My train commute is ending just in time to get rained on.”
  • Wednesday, 7:38 a.m.: “I just saw a doe in the clearing by the tracks. Commuting via @VaRailXpress is cool.”
  • 7:51 a.m.: “Add wild turkeys in a pasture to the list of today’s nature sightings on @VaRailXpress.”
  • 6:37 p.m.: “I’m stuck on the train bridge halfway across the Potomac because of a disabled VRE train ahead of us a few miles. We’re going to have to stop and pick up those stranded passengers. It’s going to be a long commute home — but at least I have a seat on an air-conditioned train.”
  • 7:22 p.m: “I normally would be at my final VRE stop by now, but we’re still stuck an hour away, with no word on when the train will start moving again.”
  • 7:34 p.m.: “I’m getting VERY hungry. Dear @VaRailXpress, can you please ask @dominos to deliver #pizza next time you have a train breakdown?”
  • 7:37 p.m.: “Take me home, urban rail — now!!! That means you, @VaRailXpress.”
  • 8:35 p.m.: “One more stop to go. Looks like tonight’s @VaRailXpress commute will be 1.5 hours longer than normal — adding time to the work I’m taking home.”
  • Thursday, 8:05 a.m.: “Last night’s commute was bad enough that it made the nightly news. Ironic that it happened the very day I said how cool it is to commute by VRE, eh?”
  • 9:09 a.m.: “Escalators out again. Must … take … break. #MetroFail
  • 6:57 p.m.: “I caught an earlier @VARailXpress train this evening so I could get home … early. Not gonna happen. Now stuck in Manassas Park.”
  • 6:57 p.m.”I just became the mayor of Stuck on the VRE Manassas Line on @foursquare! http://4sq.com/aBj3pu
  • 6:59 p.m.: “Thanks for spoiling another evening, @VaRailXpress. The good news: I just became mayor of “Stuck on VRE Manassas Line” on @foursquare.”
  • Friday, 8:32 a.m.: “Poking along on VRE. I hear the trains have to run slower in hot weather. So I guess the dreaded #globalwarming causes VRE delays, too.”
