On Jan. 1, 2008, I started a new blog called Taxation With Representation. I planned to track every penny I paid in taxes so I could show Americans how much of their hard-earned income they lose in a year to the government. The blog, a modern-day twist on the “no taxation without representation” motto of British colonists more than 200 years ago, was my declaration of a new war on taxes — and a reminder that the taxes our “representatives” slap on us are far more oppressive than anything our democratically inclined ancestors paid.
You can see the frustration and anger in rants by news celebrities like Rick Santelli and Jim Cramer. And you can see it in grassroots plans like this, which a friend e-mailed to me last week:
I’m going to send a teabag to President Obama. So is my wife. I hope everyone who reads this will, too. And spread the word by linking to this blog post and e-mailing it to your friends. Our ancestors fought a revolution so we wouldn’t have to keep funding a money-grubbing government that gave them no voice. They gave us a voice. But we have grown silent, so now we have a money-grubbing government of our own making. It doesn’t have to be that way. Make your voice heard. Send a teabag to Washington. Organize or attend a protest in your area April 15. (Go to Tax Day Tea Party for more information.) And if Washington still won’t listen, go to the polls and throw the bums out of office the first chance you get. Declare your own personal war on taxes. Take back your money! Take back America! I think it will make a huge statement. I know that Obama will not personally get my tea bag on his desk but I don’t care. That was not my intention. You don’t think hundreds of thousands of pieces of mail above normal amount will make news… cluttering the already strained postal service? I do. This WILL make a statement. Americans (the ones that are not eating at the trough) are mad as hell and we are not going to stand for it any more.
Security will filter any letter that has a tea bag in it. Maybe don’t send the entire tea bag. Just send the tea bag label. The message is the same & it will flow right trough the automatic sorting machines.
I think you will be AMAZED how many people are doing this. I am personally sending 100 tea bag letters to Washingtom (already stamped & sealed and ready to go). It cost about $60 & I think it is well worth it. There are other people in my office sending even more than that. I talked to some customers 1,000 miles away & they brought up that their office is doing it too!
It is time to speak up! April 1st 2009

They ARE listening! It was called a free and democratic election last November. Try to recognize that many, many people do not agree with you and that is why Obama won the election.

Great Movement! I sent a teabag from http://www.teabagtaxes.com, it was $2.50, well worth it for me not to have to hassle with the logistics. You can also make it annonymous that way, as they are the ones sending it on your behalf.
